Summer already hasSummer has already come and can affect our body in so many areas. Our ears are a part of our body that can also be particularly affected during the summer. The sea, swimming, holidays can cause problems with our ears during the hottest months of summer.
What are the most common conditions that cause problems with our ears and hearing and what should we do if it happens to us?
- Loud and abrupt sounds can cause hearing loss. Usually in the summer there are several concerts, as well as the throwing of fireworks during various events. These events produce very loud sounds that can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss can occur when we are exposed to sounds above 85dB or distant sounds above 120dB on a single occasion. Music at a concert, even in an open space, can be 95 – 115 dB, while the sound of fireworks can be 140 – 160 dB, resulting in hearing trauma and permanent hearing loss. The best protection against high-intensity sounds is by using earplugs. If you do not have earplugs you can get as far away from the room and high-volume sounds as possible.
- Traveling by plane can cause ear discomfort. One option during the summer holidays is a visit somewhere abroad that involves traveling by plane. During the sudden change in air pressure, usually during take-off but especially during landing, the difference in the internal pressure of the ear causes discomfort and even pain. In very few cases it can even cause hearing loss. To avoid ear discomfort and pains especially during take-off and landing you can use candy or gum that can be swallowed frequently and relieves ear discomfort.
- Swimming can cause ear infections. Swimming is a very good for of exercise with many benefits. However, in some cases swimming in the sea or pool for a long period of time can cause a skin infection in the inner ear and even ear infections. When water or moisture is trapped in the ear canal, fungi or bacteria can grow and essentially cause a skin infection in the inner ear. In such cases you should consult an otolaryngologist so as to determine the exact infection and the treatment that should be followed. Summer is a great time of year, but if we are not careful it can be dangerous. We can enjoy and enjoy what summer can offer us safely, as long as we are careful.
