What are hearing aids and how do they work?
Hearing aids are small electronic devices that are placed in the ear and they enhance the hearing of a hard of hearing person. They consist of a microphone, a sound amplifier-processor, a loudspeaker and a battery.
- The microphone It collects speech and environmental sounds and converts them into an electrical signal which is transferred to the amplifier.
- Ο audio amplifier-processor It receives the electrical signal and processes it to amplify the frequencies required for the hearing-impaired person.
- The loudspeaker It converts the amplified sound into sound waves where they are collected by the ear of the hearing-impaired person and transported into the auditory canal.
- Η battery provides the energy required to perform the above functions. There are now also rechargeable hearing aids where lithium batteries are built-in.

What are the types of headphones?
There are two basic types of hearing aids: Posterior and Intraocular. Their name was given based on the location they are applied.
Behind-the-Ear (BTE – Behind The Ear) hearing aids
Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids are applied behind the ear and are among the most popular. They are suitable for almost all types of hearing loss and for people of all ages. BTE hearing aids are divided into the following subcategories:
- Posterior (BTE)
They are worn behind the ear and end with a mold or nipple in the ear canal. The sounds are picked up by the microphone, processed by the amplifier and transferred through a tube to the mold or nipple that is securely applied to the ear. The mold is made specifically for the anatomy of your ear.
- Behind-the-Ear Open Application (RITE – Receiver In The Ear or RIC – Receiver in the Canal)
In RITE behind-the-ear hearing aids, the microphone and amplifier are located in the shell of the hearing aid, while the loudspeaker is a separate piece. The hearing aid is connected to a thin cable and the loudspeaker is attached to the end of the cable. The hearing aid is applied by adding a nipple to the loudspeaker where it is placed in the ear canal. The main advantage of RITE is the use of loudspeakers of different power, thus allowing the possibility of covering many types of hearing loss.
In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aids
ITEs are placed inside the ear and are manufactured according to the morphology of the auditory canal. They are divided into the following categories:
Rechargeable hearing aids
- Invisible in the Canal (IIC)
IIC hearing aids are invisible, tiny, and placed deep inside the ear canal. They offer a comfortable and easy fit, and are suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss.
- Completely In The Canal (CIC)
CIC hearing aids are the smallest and fit completely in the ear canal. They are almost invisible, offer a comfortable and easy fit, and are suitable for cases of mild to moderate hearing loss.
- Intracanal (ITC – In The Canal)
ITC hearing aids are small and fit inside the ear canal in a very discreet position. They are easy to use and suitable for cases of mild to moderate hearing loss.
- Internal Half Shell & Internal Full Shell ( ITE Half Shell & ITE Full Shell )
They fit comfortably and securely in the ear. They can provide optimal results even in cases of severe hearing loss.
